Application of Samarium-153 Microspheres in Theranostic Liver Cancer Treatment

The Society of Medical Physicists in the Republic of the Philippines, Inc. (SMPRP) held the 2nd episode of its Medical Physics Monthly webinar series on September 26, 2024, at 7 PM Philippine time. This episode focused on the latest advancements and research in Nuclear Medicine Physics.


The featured speaker was Ms. Shalaine S. Tatu-Qassim, a senior science research specialist at the Radiation Research Center of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute, Department of Science and Technology (PNRI-DOST), and a PhD candidate at Taylor's University in Malaysia. Ms. Tatu-Qassim presented her latest research on the application of Samarium-153 microspheres in theranostic liver cancer treatment. She is also a fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Global Research Mentorship Program for 2023-2024. Her research expertise includes nuclear medicine, radiobiology, radiation dosimetry, and advanced techniques such as micro- and nanotechnology, Monte Carlo simulation, and 3D printing.


The event was hosted by Ms. Nikkitita Magdaong, SMPRP secretary, and moderated by Mr. Jae Inamarga, SMPRP Vice-President. This installment continued to highlight the SMPRP's commitment to advancing knowledge and collaboration in the field of medical physics.
